Countdown to Christmas - 16 Days

Yankee great Whitey Ford wore number 16. Ford started more games (22), pitched more innings (154) and struck out more batters (94) than any other pitcher in World Series history. His .690 winning percentage (career record: 236-106) is among the highest winning percentages of starters with 200 decisions. In 1961 he led the AL with a 25-4 record. Ford was an 8 time All Star selection, a 6 time World Series champion, and won the Cy Young award in 1961. His 236 wins is still a team record for the Bronx Bombers. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1974, his number has been retired by the Yankees.

Honorable mention has to go to Bo Jackson. While Jackson's baseball career was cut short by injuries, he was an electrifying player to watch, and he combined power and speed. He was the first player ever to be named an All Star in two professional leagues (NFL, MLB). In 1990, he became one of just a few people in major league history to hit homeruns in four consecutive at bats (Bo's did not come in a single game, however). His best season was his All Star season of 1989, when he ranked fourth in the American League in homers (32) and RBI (105). In 1993 he was voted "Comeback Player of the Year." This card, from his 1993 season, is part of my personal collection. Oh, as an aside, Bo won the Heisman Trophy as a running back at Auburn.
